What Are Common Characteristics and Flange Types?

Common Flange Face Types

  • Male & Female (M & M&F) – This type is a lot like tongue and groove flanges, but they can retain the gasket, which makes them easier to place.
  • Ring Join Face (RTJ) – This type is best used when high-temperature and high-pressure situations are designed to help maintain seals better.
  • Flat Face (FF) – This design has a flat face, which is compatible with most flange surfaces.
  • Tongue & Groove (T&G) – Several raised sections and matching grooves make it easier to align them properly.
  • Raised Face (RF) – A small inside bore circle gasket and an expanded section to connect to.

Flange Dimensions

Flange dimensions are the next important characteristic that you should always consider. This will determine if they fit and work for the piping system. Some of the considerations you need to consider for dimensions are the following:

  • Pipe Size – This is important because it is the area that the flange must correspond.
  • Outside Diameter – The distance between two opposite edges with the flange face-centered.
  • Nominal Bore Size – This is the measurement of the flange connectors and their inner diameter
  • Bolt Circle Diameter – When measured from center to center, this is the distance found between the opposing bolt holes
  • Thickness – This is a measurement of the outer attaching rim of the flange
